To promote Taps bugler volunteerism among the civilian brass playing community, and to encourage music organizations to proactively connect with their communities to pay tribute to America's Military Heroes.

What Actions Can I Take To Become a Civilian Taps Volunteer?

As an individual:

  • Contact every veteran's organization, and/or Reservist Unit, in your area and let them know that you'd like to volunteer to play Taps for any upcoming military honors funerals where a Taps bugler is not available.

  • Contact every funeral home, or other similar community organization in your area.

  • You can also contact Bugles Across America to register as an individual live Taps bugler. That site will also educate you on some of the guidelines and protocol of performing Taps.

  • PLEASE tell them that you'll play for FREE, and if the funeral home wants to work with the family to provide a gratuity, then be clear that the gratuity is purely an OPTIONAL thing as far as you're concerned. A lot of families, veterans groups, and funeral professionals avoid asking for a live brass player because some "professionals" have been charging up to $200 per performance. That IS NOT the OperatonTaps approach.

  • Be respectful. Be professional.

As a member of a Drum Corps or Brass Ensemble:

Ask your organization's leaders for permission to proactively make contacts in your community to the let them know that your group has buglers available to play Taps at any military honors funerals. Use someof the ideas being used by other participating units; phone calls, flyers, personal contacts.

Any way that you can get your organization involved is what Operation Taps is about.

Feel free to contact other particpating corps to get ideas. And report back to us with your Stories of Service.
